I always try and catch up on the blogs and various other "to do's" over the summer and winter breaks so here goes.....
As you'll see from the photos, we are trying to stretch our wings a little with the purchase of The 27 Girl (pontoon) and Marge (ski boat). Next summer we want to keep lots of free time for using our fleet!
David and I hosted our first Dia de Los Muertos party. It was great fun. He wore both his white and black tuxes in Bill Holden fashion while I was Amelia Earhart.
Pasic was in Indy again and proved a great conference for me and the students.
Work for me has been better than ever and I LOVE my job. The students are great and the faculty are so wonderful to work with. David has been working his tail off on first serving as a contributing author and then secondly serving as principle editor of a Civil War Encyclopedia. The breadth of this project is so massive, I can hardly imagine it. For example, letter C had something like 900 pages to edit! He is very good at this though I am am proud of him for doing it.
David and I participated in two faculty versus students softball matches. In the first, the College of Humanities and Fine Arts Faculty played again the students (from the same college). It was mostly my students and a few other music majors, but we pretty much killed them. Musicians! Har. They were terrific sports about it and the game was lots of fun. The second - not so much. The same group of faculty played the UTM Women's Fast Pitch softball team in a fund raiser for them. The first inning no one on our team even tipped the ball. It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. I did finally hit a ball into the outfield and although it was caught, it felt awesome. David upgraded to professional baseball pants for the second game which I loved personally.
We went to the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego to see TCU beat Louisiana Tech (but it was a pretty close match). We stayed at this awesome place called Paradise Point on Mission Bay. We took day trips to the San Diego Zoo and Temecula. We stayed at the Lodge at Torrey Pines as well. It was beautiful and if we could have packaged up the terrific smells of the pines and carried them home with us, we would have for sure. We had a lovely "short" hike down to the beach.
David had no trouble with this hike at all which leads me to say that David is doing very well. He last check up was clean and he received a great report all around.
I am feeling fantastic and teaching way too much zumba as always, but at least learned lots of new music over the Christmas break to keep things fresh. Who knew it was that time consuming to learn new music in which you could shake your bootie.
David and I hosted our first Basement Ramble on New Years Day. We hosted lots of musical friends and welcomed a new friend, Amy Burcham, into the circle. She is a fantastically talented mandolin player that loves Brazilian chore so we hope to do more playing together in the future.
Helen came for a one night visit this week and it was great to see her. I took her to a special happy hour at Margaret's house and she had a blast.
No major changes around the house except that our outside fish had lots and lots of baby koi so we now have an inside aquarium to try and house some of the little suckers.
Agnes and Piglet are doing great and were excited for Santa to come as you can see from one of the photos.
Vacation is coming to an end as school starts back next week and we have our Roots of Rhythm tour before that. Then it really hits!
On sadder news, Jo's mom Donna Noemia is in Intensive Care. Jo is trying to get to her next week in time to hopefully see her if these are in fact her last days.
That's the news for now. Stargate January 6, 2012. Julie
